GDF SUEZ develops its energy services activities in China and Malaysia
GDF SUEZ, through Cofely, the Group’s leading brand for energy services, and Tianjin Innovative Finance Investment Co. have signed today final Cooperation and Joint-Venture Corporation agreements to build, own and operate over 23 years the district cooling of Yujiapu, a new financial district in Tianjin, China PRC.
This project will deliver cooling to 1.8 million m2 of office space, which is equivalent to 60% of the business district of Paris La Defense in France. The construction is planned to be completed in three steps, with a first phase in operation by June 2013. A further development might be carried out to reach 9.5 million m2 of mixed office and commercial space by 2025, with additional cooling requirements.
During the first phase, two energy centers will produce 160 MW of chilled water and will also rely on ice storage facilities that will increase the system efficiency by storing cooling production during the night when electricity demand is lower and will thus reduce CO2 footprint. The system should have an overall energy efficiency at least 30% above that of stand alone solutions.
In Malaysia, GDF SUEZ also signed a Term Sheet with Cyberview Sdn Bhd (“Cyberview”) for the acquisition of 49% of the issued shared capital of Pendinginan Megajana Sdn Bhd (“PMSB”); a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cyberview which owns, operates and manages the district cooling plant in Cyberjaya. The district cooling system, which now serves 37 major buildings, lowers the cost of doing business in this premier ICT hub, as well as preserves the environment and improves energy efficiency.
“Our project in Tianjin and our expansion to Cyberjaya are a landmark for the development of our activities in district energy networks and energy services in Asia. These two projects are fully in line with GDF SUEZ’ global growth strategy to expand the Group’s exposure to high growth regions and fast growing markets” said Jérôme Tolot, Executive-Vice President of GDF SUEZ in charge of the energy services business line.
Cofely is the leading network operator in France and in the United Kingdom, and operates over 180 district heating and cooling systems worldwide, including the cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, London, Monaco and Paris. Cofely meets the long-term energy needs of businesses and public authorities thanks to technological know-how that emphasizes renewable energy such as biomass, geothermal energy, waste-to-energy and respect for the environment.
